Workshop: Historical mystery author Fedora Amis shares tips on poisons May 6

Here’s a little quiz that might save your life. What is the most toxic substance known to man? One gram can kill 80,000 people. AND YET, people seek it for beauty’s sake. Poisons are fascinating because they are the ultimate paradox--good and bad at the same time.

Fedora AMIS won the Mayhaven Fiction Prize for her Victorian whodunit, Jack the Ripper in St. Louis. Five-Star Cengage published her historical whodunit Mayhaven at Buffalo Bill's Wild West in 2016. This historical mystery celebrates the actual 1898 performances of Buffalo Bill's Grand show in Kansas City, Hannibal and Sedalia. The novel received a SPUR nomination by the Western Writers of America. Fedora is also published in non-fiction and served as editor for an educational magazine.

Guild features Applewhite, Amis & De Voe at Aug. 2 Triple the Mystery workshop

Three mystery writers will share a trio of their best writing tips at the Triple the Mystery workshop from 10 a.m. to noon, Aug. 2, at the Kirkwood Community Center, 111 S. Geyer Rd. in Kirkwood. Free to St. Louis Writers Guild members; $5 for nonmembers.

  

Authors Claire Applewhite, Fedora Amis and Pam De Voe will also lead writing exercises on suspense, openings, and credibility (with just a small shot of obsessive-compulsive syndrome).

Claire Applewhite, mystery writer and Acquisitions Editor for Smoking Gun Publishing, LLC,  is a graduate of St. Louis University. Her published books include The Wrong Side of Memphis, St. Louis Hustle, Candy Cadillac, Tennessee Plates, and Crazy For You. She is an adjunct professor at the University of Missouri, St. Louis.

Pam De Voe is an anthropologist and an incorrigible magpie for collecting seemingly irrelevant information. Last October, her first novel, A Tangled Yarn, was published in a mystery-a-month book club. SLWG Author Series: New Book Spotlight

In October, the SLWG Author Series event featured the New Book Spotlight. A couple of times a year St. Louis Writers Guild showcase some member’s new books. This time, we featured two area authors Fedora Amis and Denise Elam Dauw.

The SLWG Author Series is held on the third Thursday of the month at All on the Same Page Bookstore, 11052 Olive Blvd. The interviews are streamed live online and recorded to be posted on www.stlwritersguild.net. St. Louis Writers Guild members are sent a link and can watch and interact with the event live online.

Fedora Amis won the Mayhaven Fiction Prize for her Victorian whodunit, Jack the Ripper in St. Louis. She dons corset and hoop skirts to perform as real historical people and imagined characters from the 1800s. Fedora loves live theater, travel, plants and cooking. She has one son, Skimmer, who partners Fedora in writing science fiction and fantasy. “Why do I write? I love words—always have--reading them, writing them. I even like looking them up in the dictionary. So call me eccentric. Call me crazy—but call me a writer.”

Denise Elam Dauw

Denise Elam Dauw is a music educator in west St. Louis, Missouri. She holds a M.M. in Music Education from the University of Missouri – St. Louis and a B.M. in Music Education from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. Specializing in instrumental music as a band director, Ms. Elam Dauw also has experience teaching choir, orchestra, piano, music history and appreciation, guitar, jazz band, marching band, and color guard. She is currently a member of the St. Louis Writer’s Guild, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and volunteers for the St. Louis Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
