HOME WORLD by Bonnie Milani -- Centuries of ruinous war have left Earth little more than a dusty tourist world within the star-flung Commonwealth she founded. Now, amid the ruins of a post-apocalyptic Hawaii, Jezekiah Van Buren has found a way to restore Earth – Home World to the other worlds of the Commonwealth – to her lost glory.

The most ingenious prince even the genetically-enhanced, Great Family Van Buren has ever produced, Jezekiah has achieved the impossible: he has arranged a treaty that will convert Earth's ancient enemies, the Lupans, to her most powerful allies. Once he has the treaty sealed, it will not only make Earth rich again, but it will grant him the chance to escape the Ring that marks him as Earth's next ruler. Once the treaty is signed, he will be free: free to create his own future, and free to marry Keiko Yakamoto, the warrior-trained woman he loves. His future and Earth's is assured. Assuming he can convince his xenophobic sister to accept the Lupan's alpha warlord in marriage before the assassin she's put on his tail succeeds in killing him. Assuming he can thwart another deadly uprising by the interstellar criminal organization called Ho Tong. And before his ruling relatives on competing worlds manage to execute him for treason.

Jezekiah manages to stay one step ahead of his foes, until his Lupan warlord-partner reaches Earth. And these two most powerful men suddenly find themselves in love with the same woman. A woman who just may be the most deadly assassin of them all.

Michelle Hauck: Blogs on Agent Queries & Nightmare on Query Contest Oct. 19

Michelle Hauck
Guest post by Michelle Hauck
www.michelle4laughs.blogspot.com

I started blogging about two years ago now. Like any beginning blogger, I didn’t know what to post about, and I really didn’t have a following. Most bloggers go through a trial and error period where they seek to match what will attract an audience and where their own interests lie. I was no exception.

I didn’t really hit my stride until this spring. That’s when I was mulling over getting some kind of agent contest started. It was an intimidating idea. Where to start? How to talk to agents? I’d been in a number of contests with mixed results, but didn’t know much about hosting one.

Then fate took a turn. SC and Mike invited me to join their contest, Query Kombat. We just meshed and it exploded from there. I began to focus more on providing information that would help querying writers. I did a series of query critiques over the summer and made sure to match my blog with my twitter account, using twitter to expand my blog’s reach. I’m really excited that my blog might be helping writers find their way!

Query Kombat was such a big contest that SC, Mike and I decided to hold it to once a year in the Spring. That didn’t mean we wanted to limit our contests to once a year. We decided to branch out with something smaller and easier to manage. Nightmare on Query Street was born.

NIGHTMARE ON QUERY CONTEST

How does the Nightmare on Query Contest work? We will accept 100 submissions on October 19th  by email. The submissions must include a short paragraph about your main character’s greatest fear, the query letter, and the first 250 words. Then SC, Mike, and I will each pick 10 entries for posting on our blogs for thirty in total.

All the details about the contest are available here.

Will agents actually see my entry? Agents will actually only see your entry if it gets picked by SC, Mike or I for posting on our blogs as one of the thirty. But remember we are only accepting 100 entries. That gives you a 30 percent chance of being accepted and going in front of agents.

I’d love to have some great stories join my team. I plan to trounce Mike and SC again! In Query Kombat, three out of the final four were my picks. This girl isn’t about to let the guys get the most requests with their picks. Go team Michelle!

What agents are participating? So far we have a list of eight agents, including my own amazing agent Sarah Negovetich. (Who is actively looking for clients, I might add.) We still have invitations out to many more agents and hope to see the number grow. To see the full list and the genres the agents want to see, please go here.

I don't write horror. Can I still enter a query for my book? Absolutely! Nightmare on Query Street is not about horror. Not even close. Unless it’s the horror of querying!

We accept all genres and age categories: MG, YA, NA, and adult. But, --focus—check our agents’ wish lists to see if represent your genre. Don’t enter if our agents aren’t interested in your genre. And we are not accepting picture books or erotica.

What kind of results have you seen on previous contests? (e.g. Query Kombat) Quite a few of the Query Kombat slush picks chosen by Mike, SC, and I have gotten agents and one has also gotten a book deal. I’m sure there are still requests pending from that contest and we hope to see the numbers grow.

QUERY QUESTION POSTS

Tell us about the Query Question Posts. That another of my blog series that grew out of Query Kombat. I’d gotten to know some agents over the summer through twitter. And I was in the query trenches myself at the time I started Query Questions. I knew how painful the query process is and how it makes you doubt yourself. I’ve queried four books and got a whopping number of rejections.

There are so many small things that can ruin a query, or at least ruin a writer’s peace of mind. Writers are always asking each other “should I include my prologue with sample pages. I had a typo, what do I do? When’s the best time to query?”

Well, writers can’t really answer those questions. We can only guess. But AGENTS can! So I went to the experts and asked agents to answer those worrisome query questions for us!

To my surprise, agents were usually more than happy to help! They love writers and want to make the query process easier too. I was basically overwhelmed with agents eager to submit interviews.

I’m so happy that the series has been helpful to so many writers. And it helps introduce agents to writers.

Can I submit questions for you to ask agents? Yes! Please do! Anyone can give me suggestions on twitter or on my blog. I like to mix up the questions and work in new ones. Many of the questions are from other writers. Keep the suggestions coming.

I’m interested in querying a particular agent. Do you accept requests to feature a certain agent? What a great idea. I’d love to try that. It does get difficult finding new agents to invite for the interviews. Having suggestions would be a blessing. They might not all work out (some agents are simply too busy, which is understandable), but I’d be glad to try.

A book worm, she passes up the darker vices in favor of chocolate and looks for any excuse to reward herself. Bio finished? Time for a sweet snack. Her epic fantasy, Kindar’s Cure, is released from Divertir Publishing. A short story, Frost and Fog, will be released in a summer anthology from The Elephant’s Bookshelf Press.

You can find her at:

KINDAR’S CURE: Princess Kindar of Anost dreams of playing the hero and succeeding to her mother’s throne. But dreams are for fools. Reality involves two healthy sisters and a wasting disease of suffocating cough that’s killing her by inches. When her elder sister is murdered, the blame falls on Kindar, putting her head on the chopping block.
A novice wizard, Maladonis Bin, approaches with a vision—a cure in a barren land of volcanic fumes. As choices go, a charming bootlicker that trips over his own feet isn’t the best option, but beggars can’t be choosers. As Mal urges her toward a cure that will prove his visions, suddenly, an ally turns traitor, delivering Kindar to a rebel army, who have their own plans for a sickly princess.
With the killer poised to strike again, the rebels bearing down, and the country falling apart, she must weigh her personal hunt for a cure against saving her people.

HEREAFTER Grand Prize contest winners

By T.W. Fendley

Today marks the last day of Chinese Ghost Month, a time in which it is believed that the spirits of the deceased leave the land of the dead and visit the living, similar to Halloween.

As part of HEREAFTER author Terri Bruce's book launch, The Writers' Lens hosted a writing contest seeking 200-word (max!) stories based on one of the Ghost Month writing prompts on Kelly A. Harmon’s blog.

I had the tough job of choosing between seven excellent stories--check them out in the Comments section of the contest page. My criteria were originality, story-telling style and writing proficiency. Since I'm friends with one of the contest entrants, I asked my husband John to assist as an unbiased judge (whew--friendship didn't influence my editorial judgment!).

Congratulations to the Grand Prize winners--Vicki Lemp Weavil and E.M. LaBonte--who will each receive a four-book pack of ghost stories. You can read their entries below. And congratulations to:
  • Tied for third: revoboulanger and beachhouse.writer (winners of a single ghostly book)
  • Honorable mention: aightball, booklover07202, and angel19heart (winners of HEREAFTER swag)
GRAND PRIZE WINNER: By Vicki Lemp Weavil
Prompt: A spirit is refusing to return to the spirit realm at the end of Ghost Month. Why? What will he do instead of returning?

I feel the slap, though my body has long since melted into earth.

The blow that resonates through bone, the tang of blood oozing between teeth.

I move closer to the girl and she shivers. Her dark head is bent over the teakwood table, her fingers tracing patterns in the wood. She dare not touch her cheek or display any sign of pain.

A man stands over her, his belly ballooning under his silken robes. His black hair is meticulously oiled and arranged in an elaborate topknot. He is the picture of success and achievement, the epitome of centuries of culture.

He beats his wives and daughters.

“This is my house,” he tells them. “You will do as I say.”

This girl will acquiesce. She will survive.

I sat at that table once. I suffered those blows. I did not bow my head. I died.

He turns away, satisfied. As he grabs a piece of fruit from a jade bowl he does not notice the Bird Spider that I have coaxed there. Even the dead possess some powers.

I wonder if he knows, wherever his spirit wanders, what fatal mistake he made. How wrong he was.

This is my house.

GRAND PRIZE WINNER: By E.M. LaBonte
Prompt used: Describe Ghost Month from the perspective of the ghosts—are they happy to be turned out of the spirit realm or annoyed? Are they pleased with the offerings left for them or disgusted? Can they touch, smell, and taste the offerings? Does everything feel, taste, and smell like it did when they were alive?

Kya waited by the grave stone, watching her brother and mother walk away. Her time in the land of the living was limited but she did enjoy what she could of it.

This year they had left her a chocolate chip muffin, her favorite. Since they still remained in the graveyard, the food was not yet edible. She couldn’t even touch the sweet chips or smell the delicious scent till the living had walked away. Thank the spirit keepers that the animals didn’t count in the rules, or she’d never get to taste that muffin.

When the grave yard grew silent once more, she picked up the chocolate chip delight. It was still warm to the touch. Kya smiled at the thought of her brother baking it just for her. The scent was more than the spirit realm could ever offer. She took a bite. The muffin crumbled in her hands and the taste only lasted for an instant. She held the memory of chocolate, even as the crumbs turned to ash in her mouth.

About HEREAFTER and author Terri Bruce:

Terri Bruce has been making up adventure stories for as long as she can remember and won her first writing award when she was twelve. Like Anne Shirley, she prefers to make people cry rather than laugh, but is happy if she can do either. She produces fantasy and adventure stories from a haunted house in New England where she lives with her husband and three cats.

HEREAFTER: Why let a little thing like dying get in the way of a good time?

Thirty-six-year-old Irene Dunphy didn't plan on dying any time soon, but that’s exactly what happens when she makes the mistake of getting behind the wheel after a night bar-hopping with friends. She finds herself stranded on earth as a ghost, where the food has no taste, the alcohol doesn’t get you drunk, and the sex...well, let’s just say “don’t bother.” To make matters worse, the only person who can see her—courtesy of a book he found in his school library—is a fourteen-year-old boy genius obsessed with the afterlife.

This sounds suspiciously like hell to Irene, so she prepares to strike out for the Great Beyond. The only problem is that, while this side has exorcism, ghost repellents, and soul devouring demons, the other side has three-headed hell hounds, final judgment, and eternal torment. If only there was a third option…

It's Monday again, and here is a wonderful way to celebrate the start of a new week, a giveaway!
Today we have the privilege of sharing an electronic copy of Jennifer Carson's fantasy middle grade novel,
HAPENNY MAGICK.

As if life as a servant isn’t bad enough, Mae learns that Gelbane is a troll—and Hapennies are a troll delicacy.
Years ago, a spell trapped Gelbane in Mae’s village. Ever since, Gelbane has been chiseling away the magic spells that guard the village and now Mae’s community is destined to become a smorgasbord for half-starved trolls.

Jennifer is using Kickstarter to fund her first print run of this heartfelt story. Check out the video and all the wonderful illustrations she has planned!

Win a Book of Poetry!

It's Monday! Time for another Writers' Lens contest!
Now that you know a little about me from Cornelia's great interview, allow me to pass a book on to you.  I have a signed copy of Matthew Freeman's poetry collection, Darkness Never Far - and all you have to do to win it is leave a comment!
Matthew is an amazing, award-winning St. Louis poet. His next collection is due soon, but until then, let me tempt you with his last collection. Matthew Freeman has been a poet since he was a teenager in Dogtown, St. Louis. Since then he has fallen in love, travelled the country, and sung his songs. He now lives and writes in The Loop, in St. Louis. Darkness Never Far is his third collection of poems exploring the impact of mental illness on language and mythos. (bio borrowed from Coffeetownpress.com)
A special note: Matthew recently assisted the Missouri Warrior Writer Project. The Missouri Writers Guild in partnership with the Missouri Humanities Council, is helping soldiers and their families write about their wartime experience using Poetry, Prose, and Personal Essays. The project has been a resounding success and Matthew gave his time to perform poetry workshops.
One note about the contest: Due to shipping limitations, you have to live within the continental United States to win. Apologies to the international readers. We also have giveaways that are fully online so anyone can win.
